چکیده
Malignant melanoma is nowadays one of the leading cancers among many white-skinned populations around the world. Malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, has a good prognosis if treated in the curable early stages. Early diagnosis is the most effective treatment of melanoma. Well-trained dermatologists reach a high level of diagnostic accuracy but their performance is increased by using computer aided numerical imaging tools. This study is limited in the use of simple image processing algorithms, for the sake of clarity, in order to illustrate the use of MATLAB in the calculation of the ABCD Total Dermatoscopy Score (TDS) for potentially malignant melanomas. A high ABCD score means that a lesion is more likely to be a malignant

Applying a decision support system in clinical practice: Results from melanoma diagnosis
The work reported in this paper investigates the use of a decision-support tool for the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions in a real-world clinical trial with 511 patients and 3827 lesion evaluations. We analyzed a number of outcomes of the trial, such as direct comparison of system performance in laboratory and clinical setting, the performance of physicians using the system compared to a con...

BACKGROUND In this paper we discuss an efficient methodology for the image analysis and characterization of digital images containing skin lesions using Support Vector Machines and present the results of a preliminary study. METHODS The methodology is based on the support vector machines algorithm for data classification and it has been applied to the problem of the recognition of malignant m...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether there is an association between dermatologist density and melanoma mortality. DESIGN A regression model was developed to test the association between melanoma mortality and dermatologist density, controlling for county demographics, health care infrastructure, and socioeconomic factors. Data were collected from the Area Resource File, US Centers for Disease Cont...
